Ask the experts, but

I don't think that information technology is. Yous can put a piece of binding behind information technology, but you can't set the outside surface.

I fixed a tear in an one-time felt hat. Ive had a brown fedora for years and its pretty beaten upwards though some patching and reblocking did help a lot. It had a couple of little tears in information technology and I stock-still them with a bit of innovation and patience. I would definately non practice this to a decent hat as its not a perfect solution simply information technology kept an one-time friend live.
I used superglue on the within, squeezing it into the fabric simply dabbing away with tissue the tiniest chip that showed through to the outer. Information technology fixed the rend totally just left a stain on the inside. The outside had a dip where the prepare was made so I took a nail file and took a little from around the edge of the skirt, very lightly working a scrap of the felt complimentary as a kind of dust. I then used a articulate mucilage to mix this into a paste and worked information technology into the dip adding a chip on the surface. Close scrutiny will definately show that a mend had been fabricated simply from face up to face distance and a cursory glance shows adjacent to nothing. As I said, I wouldnt effort this with a decent hat unless it was to do this or throw the thing away. It might be an thought to phone a milliner and ask their advice before trying little tricks like the one I depict.

Yous are DOOMED

Felt is not a fabric. It cannot exist rewoven. It cannot exist repaired. It is made thru the procedure of "felting". Rut, friction, and then on..

One time the hat is completed, it is "it". You can glue a piece of bankroll on the inside of the hat, and using clear gum, "repair" it. Merely it won't ever, ever, exist the same.

Moth "divots", shallow ones, can be "filled" by applying a tiny chip of articulate gum and "shavings of felt" scraped from an inconspicuous part of the hat and glued into place, then smoothed, sanded, and ironed.

Felt is one of the strongest "fabrics", again it is not a fabric, known to man. Tough as nails.

I actually repaired a tear in the same manner equally vespasian. I have an old hat that was a gift, and fairly beat. There was a tear in the top along a pucker line, about a quarter of an inch long, and getting longer. I used very thin super glue to bind the split, so I steamed, poked and sanded until it looked good. I don't call up anyone would notice information technology unless I pointed information technology out. Importantly, it stopped the tear from getting larger. As wll as it worked, though, I tin can't assist but think that dropping the hat upside-down accidently might re-open the dissever.
My purpose in asking for advice was to run into if someone had a better method. Fine art Fawcett suggested the "piece of record under the tear" method, which I have also employed to great consequence. Information technology would seem that a patch of felt fur could be glued under a split with either super glue or a sparse acryllic mucilage, or mybe even artist's rabbit skin glue. Peradventure nosotros can get some of the rocket scientists at Jet Propulsion Laboratory to come with a real fix, and for deep worm holes, likewise.

Cheers, uncle vern
Aye....don't use crazy mucilage...Information technology will go out a stiff shiny spot. Use Talas jade mucilage....information technology is archival...and stays flexible. Use very piddling on border of hole....and endmost gap....for the fibers to blot some glue to strengthen ...and so utilise terminal corporeality and tap surface of hat between fingers or finger and tabular array... keeping the surface aligned as one.

My very distinguished Scottish terrier does accept skilful taste. He is likewise well mannered. Any new item in the house he brings to my side and drops to inquire whether this item is for him or not. As I had just taken my fedora out of a decade long storage, information technology was unfamiliar to him. He brought information technology along for me to inspect, with an irresistible milk shake along the mode. BTW, My fedora was made past Battersby (London) purchased in Milan at Rossi in the mid ninety'due south

I accept been able to cosmetically help a modest, round hole past using sandpaper on the chapeau, then balling up the fur that was shaved off and gluing it into the hole with Elmers. This won't piece of work if the pigsty is too big.

I recently fixed a split in the crown of my onetime beater Whippet. I used a mixture of shaved felt (from within the hat) with white glue. I put this on the within (don't overdo information technology) to stabilize the split. Then I carefully applied some white gum to the split from the exterior and permit it all dry. Worked a charm...dissever is no longer open or visible and information technology seems stable. The repair is besides nearly invisible, surprisingly enough. I did this on a grayness fedora and could always run across the repair. This Whippet is dark dark-brown. Seems to hide the repair a lot ameliorate.

I'thousand going to bump this old thread equally well. Peradventure the planned "tutorial" really belonged here. I'll let the bartenders decide.
They were pretty good at moving my posts around when I get-go registered. I hadn't figured out the format, and was posting in the wrong places, but I had a suspicion they were nudging each other and asking, "How long do you think it will take him to find this one?" They are so good at moving posts they could probably merge the threads.
(Hint, Hint)
